The iPod has an extremely fascinating history. Originally they wanted to develop a small hard drive-based player, which was meant to differ from the much larger flash based MP3 players of the generation.
The iPod was originally based on the concept of using 5 GB Toshiba hard drives. The drives were approximately the size of a quarter. It used an operating system called Pixo. The unit also included a hi-res display and a lithium polymer battery. The scroll wheel on the front of the first iPod was its most innovative feature.
The wheel was used to scroll through the list of songs and to control the menus. The scroll wheel made it easier to navigate through the various menus and songs on the unit.
A serious disadvantage of the original iPod was lack of Windows compatibility. The issue was addressed and by 2002 a Windows compatible version of the iPod was released. In addition it came with 20 GB of storage space. The scroll wheel was replaced by a touchpad-like wheel, surrounded by a ring of buttons. In 2003 all mechanical buttons were removed from the iPod. Storage space at the time ranged from 10GB to 40GB.The newer generation of iPods also included a lithium-ion power source.
